So, you're thinking about breast surgery. Well, there are several types. They include breast augmentations, in which we basically place an implant to give you fuller breasts. Second is a breast lift procedure, where we basically lift the nipple and areola to a higher position. In those, we can also add an implant to give you more volume. The third is a breast reduction, where we basically remove breast tissue along with skin, Lift the areola and the nipple so that they're in a higher position so that you end up with smaller perkier breasts. And the fourth is gigantomachia, in which we do a breast reduction as well. But in those cases, we also must do free tissue transfer or free nipple graft, basically, to reposition the nipple and areola to a higher position, along with removal of breast tissue, as we would do in a breast reduction procedure.

You guys are asking me, why do I need to have a breast ultrasound or a mammogram in preparation for my upcoming breast surgery? The reason being is that you may have a family history of breast disease or breast cancer. So you need to make sure that there is no abnormalities in you at the time of surgery that would essentially preclude you from having surgery. An ultrasound would be the least invasive of those tests that we would do but if required you may also need to have a mammogram in addition to a breast ultrasound. If you're older than 40 years old you would have your annual mammogram and you would send that to us so that we can make sure to evaluate that in preparation for your surgery as well.

Preparing for surgery starts well in advance. Here's what you need to do 90 days before your surgery to ensure everything goes smoothly:
Schedule your basic lab tests, including a CBC (Complete Blood Count) and a CMP (Comprehensive Metabolic Panel). 🩺🩸 These tests help identify any abnormalities, such as anemia or issues with your kidneys or liver, which may need to be addressed by a specialist before your surgery.
Specialized Tests: If your surgery requires specific tests like a breast ultrasound or a mammogram, book these appointments early. 🗓
Medical Clearance: Schedule an appointment with your medical doctor for a pre-surgery clearance. This ensures your overall health is optimal for the procedure.
Travel Arrangements: If you need to travel for your surgery, book your flight and post-op stay, whether it’s a hotel or an Airbnb, to ensure a comfortable recovery period. ✈🏨
Being proactive 90 days before your surgery helps to identify and address any potential issues, making the surgical process smoother and safer.
Hello, this is In Depth with Dr. De Jesus. If you're within 90 days of your surgery and you'd like a telephone consultation with me so that we can review your file and I can answer any questions you may have, just contact your coordinator.
Why is my pre-op taking two hours? Well, it's not like making instant coffee, you know? This is In Depth with Dr. de Jesus. First, you have to read and sign a stack of paper about this thick, and we ask you to read it and make sure that you're agreeing to it because it's important information. Two, you need to give us a urine sample so that we can test for all those drugs that may prevent you from having surgery. Third, we need to take photos of you in all the places that are appropriate for that surgery. Another reason is you're chatting away with your neighbor here, asking her what surgery she's going to have tomorrow, and you're distracted. And lastly, you just have a million questions. And if you have a million questions, then it's going to take a lot longer. So those are all the reasons. And there's more, but those are the main ones.
